Barely Finished got a chance to sit down with Ranay Orton, founder of GlowbyDaye , a hair care brand focused on simple, quality solutions for those with natural hair and versatile styles. As a self-proclaimed “lazy natural” who loves protective styles and finding simple ways to keep her hair healthy, Ranay came up with the idea Glow by Daye was born. It all started with the need of a quality satin bonnet to hold her box braids. Glow by Daye was launched in 2017 and since then Ranay has left her career as a medical sales professional to run Glow by Daye, based in Los Angeles, CA. The other most important role in her life right now is being a wife and a mom to her amazing little boys, ages 3 and 1.
BF: Who are your female role models and why? How do they inspire you?
R: I have many that are close to me including my mother and 2 older sisters. They were very strong examples while growing up of what strong women looked like. I have been blessed to have a front-row seat of them taking chances and making fearless moves to live out their dreams. It has in many ways given me permission for me to do the same. And now due to social media and the amazing access that we have into others’ lives, I have been able to not just see so many other female role models doing major things in their industry but even fortunate to connect with them and learn from them. A couple of other female founders that I look up to are Monique Rodriguez, owner of Mielle Organics and Sara Blakely, creator of Spanx. Not only do I love both of their brands, but I also admire the way that they continue to grow their companies with what seems to be a healthy balance of family and motherhood included.
BF: What does being a woman mean to you?
R: Being a woman means that I get to have it all. Fortunately, we are in a time where even though there is still a lot of disparity in so many industries, we, as women are taking control of our professional lives unapologetically while still having the amazing benefits of being WOMAN. In the words of another one of my role models, we are “Strong enough to bear the children then get back to business” Enough said. (this is Beyonce in case you live under a rock:)
BF: What are some roadblocks you’ve had in your journey to success?
R: I launched my brand on Amazon.com and was one of the first to have a premium satin bonnet offering specifically made for textured hair so I was able to gain fast traction from the beginning. Although it was a great platform for relatively easy exposure, it was hard because I saw others, primarily overseas competition, come in and try to replicate our brand soon after. They went so far as putting our logo on similar (inferior) offerings looking to capture our market share and deceive consumers. It was a tough learning lesson, but it also gave me the confidence to know that I could truly build a brand even worth trying to steal. It was tough to police the situation and I had to go into an aggressive mode of protecting the brand and it’s integrity with trademarking and creating my own channel to serve my customers directly from which is now GlowbyDaye
BF: What advice would you give to a younger you?
R: I would tell my younger self to just relax and enjoy whatever season I was in more. I always thought I had to have it figured out more than I did, especially in my 20s. I was eager to find a business venture that would lead me into entrepreneurship but I think God led me in the direction I should have gone with having a corporate professional career before full-time entrepreneurship. I believe everything that I have experienced before this has helped me in my current position in life. Ironically, I know my future self would tell the present-day version of me the same thing, RELAX and enjoy the present. So, I guess I’ll never learn HA!
BF: What was one of your most satisfying moments in your career/path/journey as a woman?
R: My most satisfying moment was reaching 1,000 reviews with an average 4.5 rating on Amazon on my first product, the Glow by Daye Satin Bonnet. Each and every review and feedback from those that genuinely appreciate the products that we provide makes all the ups and downs totally worth it. It is extremely gratifying knowing that you put something out in the world and you did it well to bless others’ lives. I look forward to continuing to make a helpful impact on women’s hair journeys and their lives.
